The aim of this study is to investigate the potential impacts of climate change on the alpine Clutha catchment, which is located in the lower part of New Zealand’s South Island. The hydrological model WaSiM was implemented and forced by an ensemble of Regional Climate Model simulations (based on four CMIP3 General Circulation Models and two emission scenarios). The hydrological projections encompass substantial changes in the regime of the Clutha as well as an increase in the frequency and magnitude of extreme events (i.e. low and high flow). The key drivers were found to be changes in the temporal patterns of precipitation and a smaller snow storage.
