Orbits, Meshes & Geodata: Grassroots Technologies & Practices of Open-Source Intelligence

Wann: 22.04.2026

Wo: Seminarraum 00.210, Tennenlohe, Wetterkreuz 15

Moderation:

We are constantly surrounded by invisible information. Electromagnetic waves engulf the airspace above our heads and flow through vast networks of cables below our feet, carrying data and information of immense scale, variety, and complexity. The infrastructures, economies, and politics of this invisible information are evolving at an accelerating rate, fundamentally transforming the ways in which geographical knowledge is produced and consumed, and by whom.

In the context of open-source intelligence (OSINT), these transformations are rapidly changing the information landscape for investigating and documenting human rights violations, war crimes, and environmental destruction. In this talk, I outline some of the dynamic mechanisms and politics of OSINT, drawing on recent case studies and reflecting on the roles and futures of artificial intelligence, misinformation, and public (dis-)empowerment.
