    Physisch-geographisches Kolloquium (PG):
Imprints of Large-scale Atmospheric Circulation patterns in Palaeoclimatic Proxy Archives.

    Dr. Wolfgang Meier (FAU)

Moderation: Prof. Dr. Achim Bräuning

The increasing frequency of extreme weather events, such as heat waves and severe droughts, is primary associated with changes in large-scale atmospheric circulation and the jet stream states. Those variations within the leading modes of atmospheric variability are stored in palaeoclimatic proxy archives. In particular, the stable oxygen isotopes δ18O derived from tree-ring cellulose, represent a valuable climate proxy for numerous regions of the world. Being sensitive to variations in temperature and/or precipitation, δ18O is applied to disentangle the interrelation between large-scale circulations and local climates. This presentation will showcase several δ18O study sites of the FAU working group „Biogeography and Dendrosciences“, providing insights into circulation patterns across Central Europe, South America and High Asia.
