A new article, authored by Carola Sommer, Hannah Paul and Tobias Chilla, has been published in the Journal of Contemporary Social Science as part of the special issue “The Beer Brewing Industry in the 21st Century: Trends, Opportunities, and Challenges”.
The study provides a comparative economic-geographical analysis of the beer sectors in Bavaria and Czechia. Using a process-tracing approach, it identifies critical junctures and examines how sectoral change is shaped by interacting economic-geographical dynamics. The analysis systematises sectoral, systemic, endogenous, and exogenous impulses influencing sectoral transformation.
Key findings indicate that, despite differing starting conditions in the 1990s, recent crises have increasingly aligned disruptions across traditional brewing regions. Moreover, in the early 21st century, both the scale and frequency of challenges and critical junctures in the beer sector have increased. Building on these observations, the study proposes a transferable 2×2 heuristic to systematise sectoral, systemic, endogenous, and exogenous drivers of critical junctures in regional sector development.
