Current Project

The project aims at providing a sound basis for anticipating Alpine hazard frequencies in the foreseeable future under climate change conditions. Existing Alpine lake sediment records were often not systematically analyzed regarding event layers, relevant sediment-producing terrestrial Alpine hazard processes were not distinguished and their magnitudes were not derived. In this project, we therefore aim at (i) systematically distinguishing underlying event processes recorded in lake sediment layers, (ii) estimating the corresponding range of terrestrial process magnitudes, and (iii) deciphering the frequency and magnitude increase in phases with elevated climatic forcing such as periods of enhanced rainstorm magnitudes. Key sites are the lakes Plansee and Achensee as well as Walchensee and Eibsee in the Bavarian-Tyrolian landslide cluster, a globally known hotspot of Late Holocene Alpine hazard events.
