Humans and their environment under extreme conditions – new evidence from the last ice age of Central Europe
PD Dr. Christoph Mayr (Institut für Geographie, FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg)
Moderation: Prof. Dr. Achim Bräuning
The climatic conditions during the last glacial were more variable than is generally assumed. Warmer interstadial periods alternated with cooler stadials before the coldest phase of the last glacial, the last glacial maximum, was reached around 29,000 years ago. During the last glacial maximum, the Baltic ice cap and the Alpine valley glaciers expanded enormously. New evidence from sediment archives in Central Europe show how these climatic changes affected the flora and fauna that formed the basis for human survival. Archaeological and isotopic analyses of finds in loess-paleosol sequences and cave sediments show that human habits, the structure of the food web and the prey animals changed during this period.
