Annual Research Retreat of the Society-Environment Research Group

Right next to the Kalksee in Brandenburg, our group gathered for its second retreat. We came together to exchange our ongoing research, reflect on each other’s ideas, and offer feedback across a wide range of topics, including the geosmin crisis in Brazil, sound archives, the sonic geographies of military grounds, driftwood, sensory geographies of extinction, microbial geographies in London, and geomodalities. Alongside this, we planned upcoming conferences and colloquia, outlining future collaborations and formats of exchange. A highlight of the retreat was our visit to the Museum Park of Industrial Culture in Rüdersdorf, where a guided historical tour introduced us to the region’s geological and industrial past and its long-standing mining industries, including a visit to the limestone quarry that remains active today.
