Quantitative wood anatomy and radial growth of healthy and declining Oak in the Zagros Mountains of Iran

In recent years, dramatic dieback has affected the semiarid forest ecosystem in the Zagros Mountain in west Iran. Field observations pointed out that Quercus brantii Lindl. (Persian oak) in the Zagros forests has been strongly affected by the occurrence of extreme recent droughts, and its decline is an environmental challenge in a critical situation for the regional ecosystems and local human populations. The aim of this study is to determine the exact year of the beginning of tree mortality, to compare the variations in annual tree-ring width (TRW) and earlywood vessel features between healthy and dead trees, and to investigate the effect of climatic factors on the growth of oak trees.
